It ran as the top singles prize of the American brand alongside the IWGP United States title. Tom Lawlor became the first champion by beating Brody King in the New Japan Cup USA final, then held it 387 days, still the longest reign on record. The openweight idea came from the NEVER Openweight Championship, where any division can challenge. Fans often search for it as an IWGP belt, but it belongs to the Strong brand instead, which is why the design shares nothing with the IWGP heavyweight plates.
